The President of the Republic, Paul Biya, has signed a decree appointing members of the constitutional council among whom are two representatives of the English speaking Regions of Cameroon.
The Atangana led council which was unveiled on February 8, 2018 through a presidential decree, has 11 members who represent the 10 Regions of Cameroon.
The Northwest and Southwest Regions have Paul Nchoji Nkwi and Florence Rita Arrey, respectively, as members of the constitutional council.
Florence Rita, shall represent the Southwest Region. After receiving the information of her appointment, she expressed the joy in her heart, while thanking the Head of state, ‘’I am humbled’’ Arrey said.
Florence Rita Arrey (born in 1948) has come a long way to where she is today. She was the first woman to be appointed State Counsel in Cameroon in 1974. She was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1984 and in 1990 became the first woman appointed Chief Justice.
Arrey became part of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) under the United Nations General Assembly in 2003.
She is President and founder of the Cameroon Association of Women Judges and Vice President of the International Association of Women Judges.
In 2011, Arrey was named one of Cameroon’s 50 most influential women.
For Pr Paul Nchoji Nkwi, the news came as a surprise to him ‘’the news came to my quiet life in the Northwest as a surprise’’ Paul Nchoji said. He promised to serve the purpose for which he has been appointed.
He has been a professor of African Anthropology in the University of Yaounde I, the Catholic University of Central Africa, and the St Thomas Aquinas Major seminary in Bambui.
Professor Nchoji Nkwi, has a whole lot of achievements to his name. He was the founding president of the Pan-African Anthropological Association (1989-1994). In 1973, he won the Frobenius Essay Award, he has equally been vice president of the African academy of science.
In politics, he has served as the policy adviser of the Social Democratic Front (SDF).
The two ambassadors of Cameroon’s English Speaking Regions, now look forward to fulfilling their tasks under the leadership of Clement Atangana.
Its worth noting that the Presidential decree respects regional balance and gender equality.
